Prior to joining Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates, Dr. Cowan traveled to Germany for two clinical neurosurgery fellowships. Under the direction of Daniel Rosenthal, M.D., Dr. Cowan studied thoracoscopic spine surgery for treatment of thoracic disc herniations and other spinal disorders. According to Dr. Cowan, this procedure allows patients to leave the hospital as early as the next day after surgery. The doctor’s studies also focused on thoracoscopic sympathectomy and minimally invasive lumbar spine surgery.

“It’s the goal of every surgeon to minimize trauma to each patient during surgery, allowing for a speedier return to normal activity,” said Dr. Cowan. “The training I received in Germany will prove invaluable in making minimally invasive procedures available to my patients.”

Dr. Cowan’s training also included instruction from Axel Perneczky, M.D., in the use of minimally invasive intracranial surgery for the treatment of brain disorders such as tumors, aneurysms and cysts, with an emphasis on endoscopically assisted brain surgery.

Dr. Cowan is accepting patients at the practice’s Rock Hill office. The new, permanent Rock Hill location of Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates is scheduled to open in the Spring of 2000. For more information, contact Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates at 1-800-344-6716
